Hayley McLellan, an Environmental Campaigner at the Two Oceans Aquarium, is passionate about a healthy environment and conscious, sustainable living choices. Rethink the Bag - an initiative striving for a plastic shopping bag free South Africa, is what gets her out of bed in the morning!
McLellan is generally inspired by conservationists and leaders who sincerely walk their talk. She adds: “I am also motivated when I reap positive results from the environmental action work that I engage in, especially with regards to human behaviour shifts that result in best practice for our earth.”
We asked her what inspired her to agree to the invitation to be a TEDxCapeTownSalon event speaker, to which she responded: “I feel that the TEDxCapeTown platform is a well organised as well as respected platform to showcase a campaign such as Rethink the Bag.”
“I have always been eager to be a part of one of their events, both for this reason as well as the opportunity to receive expert guidance in the speaking arena. I feel honoured to have been included in this event and also value all the possible networking possibilities that may present themselves.”
McLellan hopes the TEDx platform helps her encourage a broader audience to support a plastic shopping bag free South Africa. “I hope to effectively communicate that immediate commitment, demonstrated by action, is required by each individual” she says
McLellan says she is both excited and apprehensive about her talk which takes place in a week, for no other reason than having a bunch of “end-of-year deadlines” fly her way!
We tried to get to know McLellan a little better so fired a bunch of random questions at her. To which she responded the following:
If you had a superpower what would it be?
Planting well meaning thoughts which lead to altruistic do good actions in people's mind.
If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?
A sloth - literally no one has any expectations of a sloth. Not even the sloth itself!
If you could time travel, where would you go?
The world in the year 3000.
Which fictional character do you wish you could meet?
The vampire Lestat.
If you could sing a duet with anyone, who would it be?
