Lixesha - It is Time

Time is an elusive concept. While the West has defined a set of rules by which the modern world measures time, there remain vastly different understandings of the concept which impacts the way communities and cultures organise their world.

Time, whether linear or cyclical, finite or never-ending, nonetheless provides an ideological perspective through which we live our daily lives, reference our pasts, and envision our futures.

TEDxCapeTownWomen believes it is time. It is time to interrogate this very concept from a uniquely South African perspective. We ask:

  • How can we look differently at our history in order to better shape our future narrative?
  • How can we uncover alternative ways of knowing that can serve our nation better?
  • How does adopting a more holistic and African perspective shape the way we interact with sexuality, technology, gender?

It is also time to be both brave, and humble, and confront some of the most pressing issues our city and country faces, some of which themselves are a result of inequal access to precious resources such as “time”.
