#TEDxCT Speaker: Meet Kyle Ueckermann

TEDxCapeTown, Kyle Ueckermann

"We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths," Walt Disney. This quote reads like a synopsis to Kyle's life.

This serial entrepreneur who’s passionate about people and technology, is on a quest to build a better world. It’s not far fetched to refer to him as unconventional, afterall, he has never taken a generic approach to living.

Kyle wasn’t a star student, suffered most of his life with an anxiety disorder, and wasn’t stimulated by the traditional education system so never opted to attend university. Yet, this didn’t hold him back. His entrepreneurial spirit mixed with plenty of self motivation and dedication, pushed him to continually explore new things.

By age 13 he discovered a passion for 3D design which led to extensive self study. Four years laters at 17, he’d secured a full time job at an architectural visualisation company, and 2 years after his work had landed him a job at the top visual effects company in South Africa. When he was 19, Kyle became interested in photography and within 3 years he had 3 photos published by National Geographic.

Ueckermann spent the bulk of his twenties co-founding a company that is using technology to help individuals reach the needs of their communities. This company ended up raising investment in the US and is currently based in Dallas.

Accomplishing all that hasn’t resulted in Kyle taking his foot off the gas, in fact, it may have fueled his desire to change the world. In 2018 Kyle resigned from his company and then moved back to South Africa to pursue an even more ambitious idea that he believes has the potential to eradicate avoidable poverty in our lifetime. And so Vollar was founded.

He’ll be speaking about how we can change the way we think about social impact, ultimately giving society a real chance to eradicate poverty.

Kyle indulged us by sharing his thoughts on a bunch of random questions. Take a few minutes to get a better sense of his personality.

Kyle, what gets you out of bed in the morning?

It sounds cliche but, changing the world.

If you had a superpower what would it be?

Human Flight.

If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be?

A falcon. They are fast, agile, and powerful while not looking too proud like eagles.

If you could time travel, where would you go?

0BC / 0AD - Jesus was a pivotal influencer in my life and in history and this whole era was pivotal to humanity. I have done some studies on Roman history and it is something that intrigues me.

That said, my adventurous spirit is super tempted by the idea of seeing a real dinosaur so I’d say that would be a strong contender in my final decision.

Which fictional character do you wish you could meet?

Indiana Jones. I'm a sucker for adventure.

If you could sing a duet with anyone, who would it be?

Matthew Mole. I just like his music.
