Meet Lusanda Worsley: 'Where to from Here?' Speaker

Lusanda Worsley, Intersections of Change

Lusanda Worsley is well known in the South African advertising space as a strategist, entrepreneur, and innovative leader of Empire Experiential. She began Empire Experiential to provide a platform for young African talented creatives to grow and innovate.

After years of working with international brands and producing award-winning, culture, and narrative changing work for her clients, Lusanda identified a partnership as the Managing Director of South Africa with The SMC Group, a global entertainment marketing agency as well as All Women Recycling (AWR), a global upcycle innovation company helping the planet one bottle at a time.

She took to the [email protected] stage in 2016 with her talk, Diversify, Develop, Define to educate youth on the power of advertising and the need for diversity within African media and has continued those efforts throughout her career.

We asked Lusanda a few questions:

Tell us more about why you believe personal evolution, trying new things, and carving new paths is important?

I think we can all agree that 2020 has pushed everyone into the deep end. Some had to completely reinvent the wheel and others were prepared for the fall.

This year has forced us to get out of our comfort zones by doing things the non-traditional way and actually pushing people to take the risks they were almost going to.

Trying new things actually increases our creative capacity. Every single time we get put into a new situation, we instruct our brain to quickly understand, process and adapt to a unique set of circumstances, while developing a new set of skills. Our economy is in shambles and entrepreneurship is more important than ever, so trying new things is a must.

This is great because people have feared change and change = innovation. As a society, we needed to be shaken up and I look forward to more outspoken work and processes.

It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is most adaptable to change - Charles Darwin

What has being in lockdown taught you about yourself?

  1. Humanity is a force to be reckoned with when we come together with positivity, care and love.
  2. Patience is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to experience in a world of consent and quick gratification. Once you have your hands on it, it’s the most relieving breath of fresh air.
  3. Making people laugh and creating entertaining relevant content can heal some wounds.
  4. I’m good at what I love, I don’t necessarily love all that I am good at.
  5. I’m actually bloody fantastic at baking.

What do you hope to gain from this experience?

I hope to be inspired and most importantly to feel like I’m a part of something bigger.

What key message or inspirational quote would you like to share with our virtual event audience?

It may not be inspiring but the words that I live by is, “I stand as one, but come as ten thousand” - Maya Angelou
