Ntombe Thongo was born and raised in Mthambalala village near the Ntafufu river mouth, about 25km from Port St Johns. He became a sangoma in 1983, at the age of six, having undergone training that included dream interpretation and the use of traditional plant medicines. His career as a guitarist began in 1992, and he has now taken his healing skills to a musical platform. “Seventy percent of the things I sing come from my dreams. Musicand healing go tougher. I am healing those who listen to my music,” he says. Ntombe Thongo has released one album, Thokozile which won the South African Traditional Music Award for Best isiXhosa album in 2012 and was nominated for a South African Music Award for best Maskhandi Album in 2013.
